What's Happening This Month?

January 13- Family Math Night at Spring Hill School in Santa Cruz. Come see how fun Math can be at Spring Hill! The fun begins at 6:30p.m. and includes engaging math games, puzzles and math exploration. Open to the public for children in grades K-6 and their families. January 24 & 25 - Whalefest Monterey at Fisherman's Wharf. This is a fundraising event to benefit many local marine conservation non-profit organizations. Don't miss a free fun event for all ages that celebrates the Monterey Bay and whales, while benefiting many local marine organizations. The event will run from 10a.m. to 5p.m. The Old Fisherman's Wharf Association is sponsoring the event. The day will feature a wide array of fun activities including a scavenger hunt, a bocce tournament on Fisherman's Wharf, whale watching excursions, live musical performances will be provided by Nick Fettis & His Orca-stra, and a number of local bands playing rock, reggae, and jazz.For more information, call Bob Massaro at (831) 649-6544 or go to www.montereywharf.com

January 29 - Star Party at Garland Ranch Regional Park 700 W Carmel Valley Rd. Look up at the night sky and revel in its vast mysteries. Come out and join us as amateur astronomers share their knowledge of the cosmos. These two-hour events begin approximately at sunset. 5:30pm to 7:30pm. www.mprpd.org/

January 31 - Science Saturday & Sandy the Whale's Birthday! at Pacific Grove Museum. Could you travel hundreds, even thousands of miles only using your memory, or your sense of smell? Come see how well you can migrate! Try matching scents as salmon do when they try to find their home river, create a bracelet that follows the long journey of a gray whale & see if you can survive life as a migratory bird. Spend your day at the Museum as you learn just what makes these migrations so amazing! Sandy the Whale's 32nd Birthday Celebrations is at 1p.m. Drop in anytime between 11a.m. and 3p.m. during this free event to enjoy hands-on science activities. Now is the time to visit The Monarch Sanctuary in Pacific Grove. The sanctuary is located at 250 Ridge Road off of Lighthouse Avenue. Pacific Grove Museum docents are present everyday in the sanctuary from Nov. to Feb. from 12pm to 3pm, weather permitting. The sanctuary is a Pacific Grove municipal park and is freely open from sunrise to sunset. Stop by the Sanctuary, view the butterflies, and learn why thousands of them stay in Pacific Grove every winter. There is no admission fee. Donations to support the Pacific Grove Museum monarch education and the monarch docent programs are deeply appreciated. www.pgmuseum.org/events
