February 19 - Star Parties at Garland Ranch Regional Park Parking Lot. Free! Look up at the night sky and revel in its vast mysteries. Come out and join us as amateur astronomers share their knowledge of the cosmos. Hot drinks and cookies will be provided. Ages 8+. Friday at sunset. Rain, fog or cloud cover cancels event. February 20 - 21 - Shark Days Celebration at the Monterey Bay Aquarium 10am to 5pm. Included in regular Aquarium admission. Explore the ocean's most mysterious and misunderstood species with experts who care for them during Shark Days. The fun-filled weekend features special shark and bat ray feedings, behind-the-scenes shark stories from Aquarium experts, and special programs and activities. February 21 - Discover Elkhorn Slough. Glide the tides discovering the awe that is Elkhorn Slough. Paddle your kayak listening for the seagull chorus, sea lions barking and the screech of young otter pups. This guided tour is a symphony of sights and sounds for all levels of paddlers. Gear is provided. Instructor: Kayak Connection. Ages 13, Moss Landing, North Harbor. $45/$50 each, plus $10 for materials. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. February 27 - Treasure Hunt at Garland Park! Geocaching is the hunt for hidden treasures using the modern navigational technology of a GPS unit. Learn why this outdoor adventure sport has exploded worldwide. Practice the basics of this high-tech version of hide and seek and become a geocaching insider. It's fun for one and all. Instructor Ann Quattlebaum. Ages 8+. Saturday from 1 - 4pm. $10/$11 each or $30/$33 group of 4. GPS units provided for use free!

February 27 - Steinbeck's Birthday Celebration at the National Steinbeck Center. Join a hometown celebration as Salinas remembers the life and works of native son and Nobel Prize-winning author John Steinbeck. www.steinbeck.org

Saturdays in February at the National Steinbeck Center - Kids Club - West African Interactive Drum & Dance Experience. 10am-12pm The New Year begins with an opportunity for children ages 12 and under to experience authentic West African culture with Abdoulaye Diallo, a native of Senegal. Using wood, gourds, and animal skins directly from Senegal, Abdoulaye creates authentic Senegalese instruments. Students will learn to hear the unique sound of each drum. The series of classes will end with a performance at the Steinbeck Birthday Celebration on Saturday, February 27. $5 per student or $2.50 for Kids Club Members
